EPSRC – Innovate UK Hydrogen Industry Workshop

On the 18th October 2022, EPSRC and Innovate UK arranged an in-person workshop to bring together key hydrogen business stakeholders.
The aim of the event was to explore the existing research and innovation opportunities to support and accelerate the establishment of the Hydrogen economy in the UK beyond 2030.
The event sourced valuable industrial input into the development of proposals for EPSRC’s proposed investment in two Hydrogen Hubs led by EPSRC’s two Hydrogen Coordinators:
- Hydrogen Research Challenges (HyRES), led by Professor Tim Mays (University of Bath)
- Hydrogen Systems Integration (HI-ACT), led by Professor Sara Walker (Newcastle University)
The event also provided input into Innovate UK who were seeking to understand where industry sees a role for further innovation in this space, to inform future strategy and activities.

HI-ACT Webinar: Community Perspectives on Hydrogen
On 1st February 2022, HI-ACT hosted its first webinar. Hear from two key stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities hydrogen can bring to two different communities. Dr Matthew Scott outlines the issues hydrogen can create for domestic users: safety, costs, fuel-poor schemes and the consumers journey. Neil Kermode provides insights on how hydrogen is being used as a tool to solve grid constraints as a way to export energy in the marine sector in Orkney.

About the Speakers: Dr Matthew Scott is a Senior Research and Policy Officer at National Energy Action (NEA), the UK’s national fuel poverty charity working across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. He works across several of NEA’s research and evaluation projects, and previous worked on hydrogen transitions and energy justice at Newcastle University. Neil Kermode is the Managing Director of EMEC – the world’s leading test facility for wave and tidal energy converters. EMEC is also pioneering the development of a hydrogen economy in Orkney and is Project Director for the ReFLEX Orkney which is seeking to develop an integrated, affordable, low-carbon energy system for the future.
